Our Team

All of Kids Moving Company’s instructors are experienced educators with backgrounds spanning the areas of childhood development, theater, dance, education, psychology, and physical education and fitness. Many hold advanced degrees. Our teachers also attend an extensive training program in perceptual and motor development during their first year of teaching with the company, as well as on-going professional development classes.


Joye Newman, M.A.

Founder and Director

Joye earned her Master of Arts in Education and Human Development, with a specialty in Perceptual Motor Development, from George Washington University. Prior to opening her private practice, she served as Perceptual Motor consultant to a variety of organizations including the Board of Jewish Education of Greater Washington, the Technical Assistance Center of Northern Virginia and the School for Contemporary Education in Virginia. Currently, Joye is primarily involved in the clinical practice at Kids Moving Company, which provides individual perceptual motor therapy to people ranging in age from 2 to 60 years. In addition, she offers workshops to teachers and parents in perceptual motor development, creative movement, and reading readiness. She also oversees the extensive training program that is required of all KMC teachers. Joye is a founding member of WISER, and served as the original Education Chair. Her other professional affiliations include AAHPER, NAEYC and CEC.

Joye is the author (with Carol Kranowitz) of the highly acclaimed book, “Growing an In-Sync Child: Simple, Fun Activities to Help Every Child Develop, Learn, and Grow ,” and the award winning “In-Sync Activity Cards,” Her latest publication “Move to Learn: Integrating Movement into the Early Childhood Curriculum,” was published by Gryphon House in May 2015. Lucia da Costa

Senior Instructor

Lucia has been teaching creative movement and dance to young children since 1979 and began teaching at Kids Moving Company in 1991. In addition to her work at KMC, Lucia teaches ballet, modern dance, yoga and improvisation to students of various ages and spent six years working as a classroom teacher for preschoolers in the DC area. Lucia has a Masters Degree in Dance Education, and has been trained by Joye Newman as a perceptual motor therapist and provides this service to children and adolescents at Kids Moving Company.


Val Tomkins

Senior Instructor

Val moved from England to America in 1988 and began teaching at KMC in 1998. She has been a nanny in the DC area for almost 20 years, and loves being around children of all ages. As a hobby, Val paints and designs children’s t-shirts.


Arkita Hammond (Kita)


Arkita is a Child Development Associate who has been working in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2005.. She has professional experience with children ages 3 months through 12 years. Arkita loves to watch children grow socially and emotionally, cognitively and most of all physically. She is excited to expand her horizons with Kids Moving Company and to help children become “In-Sync”.


Erin White


Erin White is a professional dancer, choreographer, and instructor based in and around Washington, D.C. She is a graduate of the Dance Program at the University of Virginia, where she also received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. Erin is a former company member of the Latin Ballet of Virginia and several genre-based performance companies, where she also taught children and adults a wide range of dance styles and movement principles. Inspired by watching human development flourish, she has taught movement to children in the U.S. and France. In addition to enthusiastically teaching at KMC, you can find her performing with Taffety Punk Theatre Company and exploring the intersections of dance, theatre, music, and media through independent projects.


Tracy Davis


Tracy is a Child Development Associate who has been working in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2009. She holds numerous certificates, including Planning and Executing Creative Curriculum, and Social-Emotional Milestones. Prior to joining Kids Moving Company, Tracy worked for at Broadcasters Child Development Center in Washington, DC. Tracy loves working with children and watching them grow from babies to independent toddlers to preschoolers. One of her favorite ways of teaching the children is through music and movement.


Jill Causa

Creative Movement Instructor

Jill holds a Master of Arts degree in Dance Education from NYU and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance and Choreography from VCU. She is certified in Language of Dance®, which allows students to create and share their own movement compositions. She has attended numerous professional development workshops specifically on teaching children with special needs, dance therapy, and Autism spectrum disorders. Prior to joining Kids Moving Company, Jill was a professional dancer and New York State certified teacher affiliated with the National Dance Education Organization. Jill started her work with special needs students as a teaching artist through the New York City Ballet education department. She later created and led a sensory-based movement program for children with special needs while at Aaron School, a therapeutic elementary school in Manhattan. More recently, she led a summer movement program through Capitol Hill Arts Workshop in Washington, DC and has continued her private practice as a certified Reiki practitioner.



Carllee James


Carllee James holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Middlebury College. In recent years she has taught folk dance at Camp Kinderland, one of her favorite places to be. She has strong passions for movement, education, and human development and is excited to work with a company that celebrates the intersection of these areas.
